SCAD Museum of Art presents “Gesture,” a look into five diverse artistic processes of SCAD professors who, upon closer inspection, share an affinity for manual gestures in their art making and the expressiveness of marks left behind.

Concerns with gestural mark making and its relation to movement inform many of the works in the exhibition. Martha Whittington’s sculptural installations reference ritualistic functions of Native Americans from the north. Joshua Jalbert’s stark black and white photographs show mimetic and graphic representations of light and natural movements. Liz Sargent creates delicate and ephemeral metal-string drawing installations, whereas the reduced palette of Todd Schroeder’s abstract painting emphasizes textural brush marks. Chin-Cheng Hung’s pastel drawings capture the fleeting, blurred movements of bodies in motion.

The exhibition “Gesture” brings together multidisciplinary works by SCAD faculty members Joshua Jalbert, professor of photography (Savannah); Liz Sargent, professor of fibers (Savannah); Martha Whittington, professor of foundation studies (Atlanta); Todd Schroeder, professor of painting (Savannah); and Chin-Cheng Hung, professor of foundation studies (Atlanta).

The exhibition is organized by Alexandra Sachs, SCAD curator, and Storm Janse van Rensburg, SCAD head curator of exhibitions.
